Chalimbana University students in Chongwe District took to the streets last night protesting against load shedding and blocked the main road near the university.
Confirming the matter in a statement, Zambia Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale stated that a Police officer sustained a serious wound on his right hand while a motor vehicle which was being driven by a 26-year-old man of Chongwe District had its rear windscreen shattered.
Mr. Mwale revealed that the officer identified as Inspector Patrick Choongo aged 49 was rushed to Chongwe District Hospital for medical attention and later referred to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital where he is currently admitted.
He disclosed that Inspector Choongo’s condition is said to be stable.
He added that Police investigations reveal that the students started behaving unruly around 21:00 hours when there was no electricity supply at the University.
“Police officers who rushed to the scene found the road blocked with burning tyres and big stones. Upon seeing Police officers, students scampered but continued throwing stones. Further investigations indicate that the students rioted because of load shedding which affected the university and surrounding areas,” Mr. Mwale said.
Calm was restored around 23:00 hours. No arrest was made as investigations to find the culprits are still ongoing.
