GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO BUILDING DROUGHT RESILIENCE-VEEP

Acting President Mutale Nalumango says the government is committed to implementing sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of drought and build resilience in the country through various initiatives aimed at improving water supply for farmers.

Ms. Nalumango added that the government is working hard through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit DMMU to ensure that the affected families receive the relief food quickly.

ZANIS reports that speaking during the handover of the donation of foodstuff from the government of Burundi in Lusaka today, Ms. Nalumango disclosed that the foodstuff is already in transit to the affected households.

She highlighted that the drought experienced in the 2023/2024 farming season has had a devastating impact, affecting millions of Zambians and stated that recovery from such a disaster can only be achieved with support from partners such as the Burundians.

The Acting President has thanked the government of Burundi for their show of solidarity and ubuntu through the donation and has assured that the donation will go to the intended beneficiaries.

And handing over the donation on behalf of the government of Burundi, Burundi Ambassador to Zambia Elizabeth Butoyi explained that the donation of 5,000 metric tonnes of Maize, Rice and Beans is a fulfilment of President Evariste Ndaishimeyi’s announcement of the donation in July during his visit to Zambia.

Ms. Butoyi said the donation is a sign of solidarity and unity for the two countries as they strengthen their relationship between them in common sectors.
