The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit(DMMU), has donated tents , blankets and food staffs to Luangwa residents whose houses were destroyed and roofs blown off by the whirlwind.
Luangwa District Commissioner Luke Chikani, who handed over the donation, thanked the government for the quick response.
Mr Chikale said over ten houses had their roofs blown off by a whirlwind in the district
He noted that the donated items include 20 boxes of dates, 6x 2.5litres of cooking oil, 75 x03x3m iron sheets, 50kgx2 bags of beans among others.
One of the beneficiaries of the donated items, Greyson Mumba, thanked the government for the donation, stating that it will help to reduce the challenges faced by victims in terms of shelter and food staff.
“My house was completely brought down by the whirlwinds, and as a family we had a challenge of shelter, therefore I thank the government for the donation.” he said.
And headman Kaulungu expressed gratitude to the government for the quick response to the challenges faced by the victims.
He noted that government interventions in the people’s plight are appreciated by the local residents.
The headman further called on the government through the local leadership to continue with empowerment programs and help uplift the livelihood of the communities in the district.
“We appreciate government efforts to safeguard and uplift the lives of our people in the communities”, he said.
