STRONG WINDS DESTROY SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE IN KAFUE

Strong winds and heavy rains have blown off the roofs of five classroom blocks and three offices at Kabweza Primary School in the Kabweza ward of Kafue District.

Confirming the development to ZANIS, Kafue District Commissioner Maurice Hikapulwe described the disaster as sad and said Kabweza primary school has seven classes, and all the classroom blocks had their roofs completely blown off.

He disclosed that the incident happened over the weekend.

“We have experienced yet another disaster in the district involving school classroom blocks. Kabweza Primary School is one of the affected. The entire school structure was affected, and five classrooms and three offices had their roofs blown off.”

Mr. Hikapulwe added that Chikupi Primary School also experienced a similar incident with one classroom having its roof blown off while a 1 by 3 classroom block with 2 offices had their walls weakened and need to be replaced

“Chikupi Primary School has also been affected, a classroom has a roof blown off but the entire structure of a one-by-three classroom block with 2 offices have been weakened and needs replacement,” said Mr. Hikapulwe.

He disclosed that the district Disaster Management and Mitigation team comprising officers from the local Government, Education, infrastructure, and DMMU visited the area and conducted assessment.

Mr. Hikapulwe further disclosed that the district District Disaster Management Committee is also looking to the Constituency Development Fund-CDF disaster Component allocation to work on the replacement of the affected school infrastructures before schools resume next year.

“ I must mention that as a district we are working on finding the fastest possible way to get the affected infrastructure worked on, if possible before school resumes so that learners, especially at Kabweza primary school,” stated Mr Hikapulwe.
