DISABILITY ADVOCATES WELCOME ZAMBIA-MOZAMBIQUE COLLABORATION

The Disability Rights Watch has described as encouraging the resolve by the government to collaborate with the Mozambican government in the fight against organised crime, especially the protection of people with Albinism.

Disability Rights Watch Coordinator, Bruce Chooma, said the move will also help to push the agenda of the African Union Plan of Action for the protection of people with Albinism and will further help to support the country’s legal and regulatory framework around the protection of people with Albinism.

In an interview with ZANIS this afternoon, Mr. Chooma further said the collaboration with Mozambique is particularly important because most crimes against people with Albinism are organised international crimes and therefore require international effort to avert.

He added that the country’s current laws are not strong enough to prosecute crimes against people with Albinism such as mutilation and sale of body parts.

He said therefore the country needs to come up with a plan of action to prevent the crimes.

Zambia and Mozambique yesterday concluded the 13th session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security in Chilanga and resolved to strengthen collaboration in fighting transnational crimes such as illegal immigration, human and drug trafficking and terrorism threats.
