OVER 100 CHONGWE GIRLS ATTEND KGS SYMPOSIUM

Chongwe district has successfully hosted the Keeping Girls in School (KGS) symposium aimed at promoting academic excellence.

The symposium was held to help improve the poor academic performance by most girls on the KGS programme.

Speaking at the event, Chongwe District Commissioner, Evans Lupiya, said the symposium will help promote the best practices for enhancing academic excellence among KGS implementing schools.

Dr Lupiya said in a speech read on his behalf by Chongwe District Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, Mary Mabele, that the symposium, which attracted over 100 girls, supports girls with an education grant to enable them buy school requisites such as books, shoes, uniforms and paying boarding fees to those in boarding schools.

He noted that over the years, there had been poor academic background and other vulnerabilities that most of the KGS girls were exposed to.

“It is against this background that as part of the case management system interventions, the project decided to start implementing annual academic symposiums as a way of promoting academic excellence in schools,” he said.

And Chongwe District Education Planner, Mwaba Chileshe, said the symposium has provided an opportunity for various professionals working within the district to motivate the girls.

Over 173,116 girls have been supported country wide since the KGS programme was introduced in 2016.

Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Kangelu Kukeng’a, thanked the government for the initiative to ensure that girls education is secured.
