BuyZed Campaign Chief Executive Officer Evans Ng’oma, has urged the Road Development Agency (RDA) to upgrade the Great East Road to a three-lane highway from the Toyota Zambia roundabout to the Chongwe River Bridge in Chongwe District.
In a statement made available to ZANIS, Mr Ng’oma stated that the upgrading of the road would significantly reduce congestion and enhance road safety.
Mr Ng’oma emphasised the importance of planning Zambia’s road infrastructure with a 50-year vision adding that this forward-thinking approach would enable the country to anticipate future growth and demands on its infrastructure, ensuring that roads support Zambia’s economic development.
He also recommended applying similar upgrades to all trunk roads leaving Lusaka, citing the notorious stretch between Munali roundabout and Airport roundabout.
Mr Ng’oma noted the need for modernisation and efficiency in road design.
He explained that better-designed roads would not only improve road safety but also enhance the overall travel experience.
Mr Ng’oma further appealed to engineers to design more modern and functional overpasses that are both aesthetically pleasing and contribute to the country’s development.
“To finance these projects, the BuyZed Campaign proposes exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) or local financing options, enabling the development of a modern and efficient road network without placing an undue burden on the government’s finances,” he said.
“The campaign urges the Road Development Agency to collaborate with them to create a better future for Zambia’s road infrastructure,” added Mr Ng’oma.
