Lusaka Province Health Director, Simulyamana Choonga, says the province has not recorded any cholera case since January 2025.
Dr Choonga has attributed the zero cholera cases in the province to various government interventions and the proactive community members.
He noted that substantial investment in water supply through the drilling of boreholes in vulnerable communities has also helped in preventing cholera cases.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Dr Choonga further said the vaccination campaign that was carried out in Kanyama and Matero constituencies has also contributed to zero cholera cases in the province.
He further explained that the vaccination against cholera infection has helped in ensuring that people have strong immunity.
Dr Choonga however stated that people should continue maintaining high levels of hygiene despite having been vaccinated against cholera.
He also noted that cholera vaccines do not fully protect people, adding that it is however more effective with other cholera preventive guidelines are also applied.
He has since urged Lusaka residents to endeavor to use clean water, dispose of waste and eat clean and safe food because vaccines are not 100 percent safe.
“If you are vaccinated, you may catch the infection, but you may not show very severe signs and unfortunately you can spread the infection to somebody else,” he added.
Dr Choonga further called on the people who were vaccinated against cholera to continue adhering to the regulations as prescribed by the health workers to avoid the recurrence of the disease.
He also advised the community members to visit the health facilities whenever they have diarrhea and vomiting.
