The Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) has urged government institutions to fully implement the National Policy on Persons with Disabilities.
ZAPD Director of Planning and Programmes, Inger Mutenekwa, said the policy provides guidelines to ensure inclusivity in delivering public services.
Ms. Mutenekwa made the remarks during the National Social Protection Policy sensitisation meeting in Chilanga District.
Ms. Mutenekwa noted that persons living with disabilities should have equal opportunities to access schools, workplaces and other public services.
“This includes the provision of amenities that assist people with disabilities, enabling them to participate fully in society,” she said.
She emphasized that accessibility is a key aspect of inclusivity and should be prioritized in all public services.
“Accessibility extends beyond facilities to features such as braille signage, wheelchair ramps, elevators, audio signals at pedestrian crossings, walkway contours, and website design,” Ms. Mutenekwa explained.
She added that persons with disabilities must not be left behind in Zambia’s development agenda and that their needs and rights should be considered in all policy decisions.
