Luangwa District Commissioner Luke Chikani has called for concerted efforts in the district in preventing health hazards and outbreaks of diseases such as cholera.
Mr Chikani says the cases of cholera recorded in Mpulungu, Mbala and Nsama districts since August 5th, 2025 are a wakeup call for the district to heighten its health surveillance and prevention measures.
He was speaking during the District Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Response and Control Committee Meeting in Luangwa District.
“Our duty is not only to respond to crises but to prepare ahead of them because experience has shown that when communities are prepared, the impact of such outbreaks can be reduced, lives can be saved and resources can be used more efficiently,” he explained.
Mr Chikani emphasised that schools must have clean water and proper sanitation while market places must uphold hygiene standards, while communities must be sensitised to recognise early signs and see early treatment.
He appreciated that government, through the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema for the unwavering support in providing essential commodities and addressing transportation challenges.
“We appreciate the allocation of an ultra-modern ambulance to Luangwa District through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF), which will significantly enhance our ability to transport patients and others in need of higher-level care,” he appreciated.
Luangwa District Health Director Ikasaya Ikasaya explained that the health sector is intensifying its surveillance system to prevent any possible disease outbreak such as cholera.
