LUANGWA CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DAY

Luangwa District Commissioner Luke Chikani has called on residents in Luangwa District to minimise waste generation, maximise re-use and promote recycling to reduce the environmental footprint of communities.

Mr Chikani says the district should intensify on raising awareness to community members about the environmental health issues and drive collective action to address these challenges.

ZANIS reports that speaking when he graced this year’s World Environmental Health Day in Luangwa District, Mr Chikani explained that the same principal applies to having clean water and clean air by promoting initiatives that preserve water sources, reduce pollution and promote clean air quality, thereby protecting public health and the environment.

“In order to achieve these goals, we need to engage with local communities because this is vital in our quest for environmental sustainability,” he says.

Luangwa District Health Director Ikasaya Ikasaya says the issues of environmental health cannot be separated from human health.

Dr Ikasaya says human beings need to be in a conducive environment if they are to maintain good health and breathe clean air.

“The theme for this commemoration, ‘Clean air, and healthy people’ emphasized the need for the communities to put their efforts together in order to achieve these goals and have a healthy district,” he explained.
