Mandate

To provide policy guidance on provincial water resources related issues and develop both surface and groundwater resources of inland and transboundary water bodies in order to ensure adequate water resources availability and equitable access by all users for sustainable provincial socio-economic development.

Provincial Water Resources Development Functions

The department has its presence in the province and district centers. Over time, the department has evolved assuming different responsibilities.

  • Assess water resource demands from the various sectors in order to inform planning;

    2. Conduct exploratory drilling to Facilitate development of well fields and Production boreholes to inform the availability of water;
  • Develop hydraulic infrastructure such as dams, wells, levees, canals for harnessing water resources to support all sectors;
  • Manage contracts for the development of water infrastructure in line with required standards in order to facilitate the execution of projects; and
  • Installation, operation and maintenance of dam and drilling construction equipment in order to sustain water infrastructure
  • We provide water services to other government institutions in terms of Technical support, geophysical survey , drilling of boreholes as well as pumping Tests
  • Provision of surface water infrastructure services to Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate for them in provision of irrigation services to other institutions and the general public
  • Provision of water services to people such as Technical support, geophysical survey , drilling of boreholes as well as pumping Tests
